'Get Under the Wire'

After the explosion of colors in my last work - The Year of the Dragon - I wanted to make a work in black and white. Well, almost only black and white, since I added only one color (in several tones of course!) to it. When I look at my painting now it's finished, I just cannot believe that I've worked on it for weeks (with a pause of 5 days because I had the pleasure of having my fellow artist Bayo - mexican but living and working in Austin, Texas - and his wife staying at my house). It has a lot of details, but at the same time it looks so simple to me. I've been 'in this painting' for so long that I can not look at it objectively anymore.

It is called 'Get Under the Wire', 100x160 cm | 39x63 inch.

Get under the wire, is an english expression, and to me it's that + the exact translation of the words and a lot more.

Talking of Bayo, his work is really awesome!!! He was in Belgium to attend the opening of his solo exhibition 'Let me in' at ARTISHOX Art Gallery. Cleaning up

Mucking out my studio and take stock is not my idea of having fun...
Many pots are almost empty, but since I don't want to waste anything I'll scrape out the paint until the last drop.
Not the most adventurous thing to do....
The good thing of cleaning up is that I find back things I lost a long time ago.
By now you must have understood that I am not the most tidy person in the world....
The definition 'chaotic' fits better.
Anyway... I have to continue my 'quest'. Writing this blogpost was just an excuse to take a pause from doing work I don't like.

The Year of the Dragon

It is ready... My painting 'The Year of the Dragon' (100x200 cm | 39x79 inch) .... It is fierce, impetuous, forceful, truculent, fervid and impassioned.... if this is what the upcoming year (as from January 23) will bring me, I'd best fasten my seatbelt ;)

In the middle of a new painting

Finally the sun is shining... although tomorrow it will be raining again. Like it has not been raining for almost the entire month of December... grrrrrrr.
What really worries me though is to hear the sound of birds which usually announce spring... and to see buds on trees and bushes.... which always gives me this good feeling! But not in the first week of January!!!
But worrying does not help....So I better enjoy the sunlight shining into my studio big time!

I've started a new painting on the second day of this year and I just can't let go of it.
It grows under my hands and everytime again I watch it like it's a miracle. Maybe that is what drives me...?
There still is a lot of work to do on this painting and I don't know how long it will take to finish it. I've learned to be patient (well only considering my paintings).
It is called 'The Year of the Dragon' which is about to start (on January 23), my Chinese sign, so my year. Curious what it will bring! I'm going back to my painting now.

Last day of the year....

A challenging brand new year lies ahead of us.
Unstable times, worsening economic crisis and accelerating climate changes do not really make people carefree... To put it mildly...

We can dive into it, and stay under water.... But we better act creative, pick out the positive sides of the changes and take up the challenge to drag out the best and enjoy every single minute of it!
Anyway, that is what I do, and plan to keep on doing. I can assure you, it's proving a success and makes one feel better!

I wish you luck, health and wisdom, positive energy and creativity in all aspects. Keep your eyes wide open and embrace life.

The machine goes on and on..

For a lot of reasons this time of year, as long as I remember, never has been my favorite one.
Winter can have its charm, but not when it's wet, cold and grey...
Especially the wet and grey part are not my cup of tea.
Time for contemplation.

No painting now... I'm taking a break.
Well, my hands do.... but in my head the machine goes on and on.

Making plans for my new series.
I can't hardly wait to start it. But first it has to simmer, and next it will start to itch.
That's good!
When the itch becomes unbearable I'll start painting.
I'm already curious for the results!

UNDERLYING ANXIOUSNESS

First: I am not only an artist, but I'm also an art lover. Loving art to me means that I can leave my own taste at home, and 'judge' contemporary and older art by its quality, originality, unicity and power to impress/touch the heart/get under one's skin. And (for older art) also the time/period that it was made in. Usually I only react on art and artists when I really think it's great (or when an artists asks my opinion, but then I will always give constructive criticism). I don't like to talk bad about art, because negative criticism can say as much (or more) about me, than on the art(ist) in question and I also do not want to disappoint people.
But now... I'm sorry, I really need to speak up. Not because I think that I am better! NO... because I think a lot of artists, including myself DESERVE better. At least as much as Damien Hirst...
Or I'd better turn it around? He does not deserve more than a lot of extremely talented/their-ass-of-working/high quality/unique/original artists do....?

Maybe I just have to see it this way: he's the lucky one....?!

What's this all about?

Damien Hirst, who is said to be one of todays leading contemporary artists, confided to the Los Angeles Times, that his SPOT paintings look "sort of happy — like Skittles or kids' sweets" but "when you see them together you get kind of lost in them. There's an underlying anxiousness."..... Wow, what a story!!!!
I can't believe that buyers fall for that crap! I get an underlying anxiousness as well when I look at those paintings... because I can NOT understand that people pay a lot of money for something so UNoriginal and dull (times at least 300 !!!! ... Is that original ?????).

Hirst's SPOT paintings are exhibited in all Gagosian Galleries all over the world.
YES.... GAGOSIAN!!!!!!

Gagosian is a leading gallery. I mean... if I could work with them... that would be like winning the lottery... okay okay I will stop dreaming out loud.
But really... I do NOT see another reason for them to work with Damien Hirst than the fame of his name.... or differently said: the money they can earn with his fame. Or do they really LOVE his spot paintings and butterflies???
I know that a gallery is not a charity institution. They have to earn money just like everyone else does. But there really are artists on this planet who have more exciting art to select from!
Of course, Hirst has done a lot more than his Spot paintings and his Butterfly paintings. I actually like his shark (and other animals) period... because it was innovative. But I cannot say that about his recent work (of the last couple of years). I think it's highly overestimated and personally I do not understand that an artist of his level wants the Spot paintings to be known as his! I'm sorry... I would not! I would love to advice Gagosian on some very good other artists though!

I need to add that I am not a jealous person. I really wish the best to everyone, especially to those who work hard to reach their goals (in each field). I wish the best to Damien Hirst as well (so Damien don't take this too personal!). By the way Damien, there are some other artists as well who would easily fit in this post, instead of you.

The next big thing.. (last one this year!)

The last exhibition of this year is coming up. It will be at 'Van Bellen Art' in Willemstad, the Netherlands and it's a solo exhibition.

I'll be attending the vernissage on Sunday, Nov 27, 14.00-17.00 hours.

It would be so nice to meet you there!

The exhibition will last until Dec. 31.

Van Bellen Art successfully represents my work since mid 2011.

Willemstad is a beautiful old town near Rotterdam. It's an ancient fortress, and really worthwile to pay a visit to. First there was Willemstad in the Netherlands (1584), later on another Willemstad was founded on Curaçao.

But somehow I could not publish it on my blog. So now, back home, I'm going to publish it after all. And a little bit more.

Sunday morning, NYC:

I'm sitting at Starbucks on 7th Avenue, drinking a green tea and thinking over what I've been experiencing during the past days here in NY.
The Calvet movie was just stunning. It has been launched yesterday at the DOC NYC festival in New York City.
Not that it is an action film with a lot of special effects... It's just this amazing extraordinary story told with so much openness
(I don't know if that word exists) and integrity that it hit me right in the heart.
It just rolled over me and afterwards it just blew me away.
Maybe because I know Jean Marc in person, maybe because of his honesty and not keeping up appearances...
Maybe because of the integrity of Dominic Allan the director of the documentary...
Maybe because of the intriguing music of Edith Progue... But I think it's everything together.
I've been following the proces of the movie since 2008, when I started working with Monkdogz Urban Art,
the gallery both Jean Marc Calvet and I work with in New York.
I've get to know him a little bit over the past years, am close with the gallery owners Marina Hadley and Bob Hogge, got to know several people
who are involved with the movie, like Dominic Allan and Edith Progue... I feel really priviliged to have been able to
attend this very special happening and the opening of the solo exhibition afterwards.
It was really crowded and there was this awesome undiscribable positive vibe...
It's the day after and I'm still walking around with this crazy smile on my face.
Just being happy I think and enjoying life. I'm going out there again now, in the sunshine
Just took a look at the NY marathon at Central Park and now heading to Times Square. I just love New York.

ATTENDING THE LAUNCH OF CALVET IN NEW YORK

Today is a very special day. Finally the movie about my fellow artist Jean Marc Calvet is being launched on the DOC NYC Festival in New York City. I'm one of the guests (YESS) and afterwards I'll be attending the opening of the solo exhibition at Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery on 150 East, 52nd street. The show will last Nov 10, so if you want to take the opportunity to see his work: GO THERE! If you want to meet the artist, Jean Marc Calvet will be there every afternoon!

I arrived in New York yesterday and met with Dominic Allan, the director and producer of the film. We mailed several times over the past year, and it was great to finally meet in person. Of course Jean Marc was there too, painting, installing and having fun... It will be a great day today and maybe I'll meet one of you too!
I know one thing... when the film starts and the music comes up, the goosebumps will be there! Thank you for the wonderful music Edith Progue! (I've heard it about a thousand times)

The day after BLOOOM - a review!

I'm happy but soooooo tired. Last night I hit my bed at 03.00 hours and did not sleep well. BLOOOM, especially yesterday was too impressive to digest it all. Not only the exhibited art overall, but I received many many heart warming compliments on my work... People even came back after seeying the entire fair (sometimes 2 or 3 days one after another), to tell how they felt about it. I can tell you, it did something to me. Also, sometimes it gave me a strange sensation. It's like it was not about my art but about someone else's. Art Fair and Blooom together showed so many wonderful art that for me it's an honor to have been one of the participating artists. There have been made tons of pictures of my Girls in Paint... if I would have asked one euro for each picture I would have earned a lot of money!! One guy made about 20 detailed pictures of every painting from every point of view (of course without asking)... I would not have been surprised if he would have photographed the backside of the painting as well.
Anyway, I participated with ARTISHOX Art Gallery who also represented Philip Bosmans', Derek Stenning's and Michihiro Matsuoka's work. This combination was soooooo good! Lots of reactions on everyone's work. People drooling in front of Stenning's amazing astronauts, disarming smiles in front of Matsuoka's lovely creatures and astonished faces followed by happy smiles looking at Bosmans' paintings. It was so interesting to observe all those reactions, smiles etc....
It was an awesome reunion with artists I met last year like Pier Paolo Quaglia and his wife Cindy, Skeleton Hearts' Lisa Crawley, Elmer Presslee, Daniel van Nes, Christian Rothenhagen. Of course my dear friends and both artists Raf Veulemans and Miraschi! Also I met again with clients and people who were interested in my art last year came back. Great!
I really did miss Anthony, Claire, Nick and Sacha, but I met some lovely artists like Paul Tobin all the way from New Zealand, Birgitta Sundström Jansdotter, Kanter Dhaenens and our neighbour Ella Buzo from Cabinodd. I'm sure I'm forgetting people, I'm sorry.. the hard disk in my head is overloaded.

I'm preparing for BLOOOM, the creative industries art show in Cologne! At the end of this week the second edition of this wonderful art fair, linked to ART FAIR 21, will get started!
Like last year, my art will be represented by ARTISHOX Art Gallery. My newest colorful series 'Girls in Paint' will be exhibited for the first time here. ALSO... very affordable but nevertheless professionally scanned fine art prints will be available! I'm very proud my art will be in the wonderful company of the awesome works of Japanese artist Michihiro Matsuoka, Belgian artist Philip Bosmans and Canadian artist Derek Stenning.
I'm really looking forward to reunite with the friends I made last year, artists from all over the world! But I feel sorry too that some are not going to be there. Nevertheless I know this is going to be a great event!

Chasing time

Crazy world we live in and time passes by so quickly that I can hardly keep up with it.
September has flown, only one day left and October is about to start! I'm chasing time. I've been working like crazy, so much is going on!
And now, after this awful summer with much rain, and hardly any sun has ended ( I had already put away my summer clothes) NOW summer has started!
The average temperature in the past week has been higher than in July and August all together!!!
Summer in the Fall... What will the Winter bring???

Anyway... I've finished my assignments and moving on to the next point on my list...
In one month Blooom, the Creative Industries Art Show in Cologne will get started and I still have some work to do for that!

Corporate identity

Wow, what's in a name!

Today 'The Ultimate Conjunction' was revealed, with great interest, at Big Media Group.
Through ARTISHOX Art Gallery I got the assignment to create a large painting for this worldwide operating enterprise.
The headquarters of Big Media Group is situated in a very modern premises, with large white walls, a lot of light through large windows, and real trees growing inside of the building.
Big Media's main task is to connect enterprises through their magazines, which are regional oriented. The company has very strong values, and their staff is very loyal. The company is modern, dynamic and innovative.
Those aspects made the inspiration for my painting: connection - cooperation - weaving - fusion - together - going for the ultimate result - dynamics.

It is always exciting, but fortunately the C.E.O.'s of Big Media were thrilled, and their staff as well.
Anyway, I am so proud that my art is in their house!

Small detail of the blurred painting... me busy applying the last details.... the finishing touch. The client is the first one to see the complete painting.

Okay... the large painting is ready!
During the process of creation a painting gets under my skin deeper and deeper.
I've been absorbed by it for about 3 weeks now, and I just had to crawl out of it and let go.
Upcoming week: presentation to the customer. The company wanted a screamer... one you can't pass without being moved by it (in one way or the other).
I think it will be very hard to NOT notice this painting. Nevertheless, the main thing is that the customer likes, no... loves the painting. Exciting!
Ben (Artishox Art Gallery) thinks the work is great and although I'm very satisfied with the painting myself, I know I'm going to be nervous about the reaction of the client (as always).

Not that I can sit down and relax now.
I've started another painting on commission.
And I have to create a few more paintings for the upcoming art fair BLOOOM in Cologne - Germany (end of October), and for a new solo exhibition at Van Bellen Art in Willemstad - Netherlands (December)
Last year the first edition of Blooom, the creative industries art show, in the 'Staatenhaus am Rheinpark' in Cologne, was a success. It is linked to ART Fair 21, the very prestigious art fair which shares its facilities and space with Blooom from Oct. 29 until Nov. 1 2011.
This year I'll be represented once again on BLOOOM by Artishox Art Gallery, together with 2 top artists and 1 very talented emerging artist. EXCITING!
Besides all that, I'm busy with a few other things... It's a bit too much all together, and I have to set my priorities all the time, but hey... nothing to complain about.
I just have to remind myself every now and then that I need to relax, that's all.

And yes... I dyed (painted) my hair too.

Since about 2 weeks I'm busy with an awesome assignment which I got through Artishox Art Gallery: creating a large painting (and I love making large paintings!) for the reception of a big international media enterprise.
This is also called 'Corporate Art'.
In my opinion this sounds too commercial.
Whether it is for a company or for a private person, for me art on commission always is a challenge.
I usually go to the site where the painting should hang.
The space, the interior/ the company, their image/ the people and their personality.... these all are very important issues for me to be able to define an image in my head of how the painting should be.
In my own recognizable style of course. I don't accept commissions that do not allow me to use my own style.
And every time again I succeed to surprise myself. In fact, when I think about it, assignments are partly responsible for the evolution in my work.
No pain, no gain.... the client only has to buy the painting when he/she is completely satisfied with my piece of art. Maybe that is the motivation which keeps me sharp.
Anyway, I see the current painting growing, and I already love it. Think it will cost me about 1 more week before it is ready.
Hopefully the client will be happy! If not, I will keep it and make another one.

Gray weather overhere in the past 2 months, with only a few days of sunshine... it doesn't bring out the best in people. The art of living is to enjoy every ray of sunshine and to realize that there's a lot of misery in the world, which is much worse than a bad summer situated in the luxury of the western world. But when the extreme weather blows away a complete music festival like Pukkelpop in Hasselt - Belgium (nearby my hometown), 5 people died, 10 very heavily wounded, 140 wounded.... one feels humble. My thoughts go to the victims and their beloved ones.

In my art I try to make the sun shine.

It's my way to deal with life.

But since the world has become so small through internet and social media, we are all related to eachother, somewhere or somehow.
Moreover, it is said that someone from outside who's familiar with the facts, can see the state of affairs more objectivly.

What happens in the USA affects the world.
Furthermore their happen to live a bunch of people in the USA I really love.
That is why I have to write that I'm just dumbfounded about the fact that there is so much counteraction against Barack Obama. Of course Obama is not perfect, he ISN'T a god... but he does his utmost!!! In my opinion Barack Obama is a president to be very proud of. He knows what integrity means and sets out to save the country from ruination after Bush's devastating leadership.
Bush left something that looks suspiciously like a garbage dump, and now Obama and his administration have the thankless task to clean up the trash in only 4 years.
This almost impossible task has become even more impossible, because of the constant counteractions by the republicans who's only goal seems to be 'power'.
Not the welfare of ALL their residents is the most important issue on their agenda, but the next presidential elections.
But hello.... HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
What about COOPERATION to save the USA??
Do I have to spell it out?
OH MY GOD....
Work together people, and save your country.
Use the money meant for the presidential campaigns for your country.

I know it's not enough, but it will have a better destination.
Rebuild the US... so you can start living the REAL American Dream!
After reaching that goal, you can start quarreling again about who will deliver the new president.
Anyway, the competition will be much more righteous by then.

Feeling privileged...

Sometimes I feel guilty for feeling happy, while at the same time there's so much misery on our planet.
Tsunamis and earthquakes, civil wars, religious wars, people starving in Africa, idiots shooting dozens of innocent young people in Norway...
The blindness of the people for the pollution of our planet, overfishing of our seas, the consequences of the meat industry, etc....
People trapped in their personal situations/relations/problems, often without the perspective to be able to change a thing...
I tell myself that I'm just a tiny player in the whole and there's not much I can do to change all this. I take my responsibilities, help where I can, and there is not much more which I can do.
I tell myself that 100 years ago it would have taken days/weeks before news from other countries/parts of the world would have arrived, and that it does not help to carry the weight of the world.

I tell myself that it's better to focus on the positive sides of life, than the negative, without ignoring them.
So I try not to get influenced too much by the news of the world, to seize the day, to enjoy and be thankful.
But hey... isn't life extremely bizarre? Beautiful and devastating at the same time...

There's too much ignorance in this world and I really don't know if this will ever change...
It should be possible to invent an improved version of life...
I think that's what still drives us artists

I can plunge into my paint, dream away in creation and in the results. I therefore feel privileged.

Details of 'Don't touch without gloves' of the Girls in Paint - series.

Last April it was Summer in the Spring. Lovely surprise, and I enjoyed it as much as I could. Unfortunately now it's Autumn in the Summer. It's raining cats and dogs overhere, while in Somalia there has never been so much drought as right now. Life's a bitch. My thoughts are with the victims of this disaster.
Although I miss the sun, the rain does not bring me in a bad mood. All I want is to paint... (I'm dying of excitement) and when it's too hot I don't have the energy.
I've made several new paintings, amongst which 4 new Girls in Paint. This time only full colour.
Tomorrow I will start a new larger one, also a Girl in Paint.
I just love my job so much!!!

A new summer, a new look! (it doesn't always have to start in the spring).
According to my wishes my website has been completely redesigned by Artishox Media.
I think it's very important to have a clear site which is easy to handle for the viewer.
Since I don't want to make a catalogue of my website, one can only find a small selection of recent work on it.
It's just to give you an impression. In my opinion art should be experienced in real life, so one can immerse in it.

I've been extremely productive during the last weeks. While creating one painting, the idea for the next one popped up and I could not wait to start it.
It's a good thing to live with my love, kids and dog. I would forget to eat and would only stop if I'm ready to drop with sleep, when I would be alone. I can't stop painting. It's like I'm infected with a dominant virus which makes me want to paint more and more.
And now I'm really tired because I did not listen to my body. It says 'take a rest'. Okay, I will....in a few days :). The only reason that I'm writing this blogpost right now is that I have to wait for the paint to dry, before I can continue.
Anyway... I'm happy with my production bombardment and the fact that I'm never without ideas, which is a burden and a blessing at the same time.
It makes me restless and I always have to find the balance. But hey... you will not hear me complain!
Next Friday, June 3, my solo show at ARTISHOX Art Gallery in Hasselt - Belgium, will get started. It displays the first paintings in the new series: 'Girls in Paint' and my latest abstract works. They make a good combination I think.

Since a long time I wanted to combine my figurative work with my abstract style. I never found the right mode. Or rather I was never satisfied with the result.

ART TRIP to New York City

New York is my favorite city in the world! Every time I'm home, I want to go back!
It was lovely to meet again the directors of Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery, Marina Hadley and Bob Hogge at their new location on 52nd street. We always have so much to talk about... time passes way to quickly.
We almost bumped into Obama on Ground Zero, visited several art sites, galleries and the Affordable Art Fair New York.... and we enjoyed the beautiful weather (sunny and perfect for a city trip).

Since I did the first 'Portable-Art' project in 2009, I wanted to try to create a belt as well. I always have so many ideas... I can't realize them all. Always have to choose (feel very privileged!). Finally I couldn't stop myself from doing it and this is the result.

This morning, when I was exercising on my elliptical, I saw the documentary 'Who gets to call it art?' made by Peter Rosen, which just happened to be broadcasted on TV.
Really interesting to see how 1 person was of as much influence to the art world as Henry Geldzahler (born in Antwerp - Belgium) has been at that time in New York.
Very interesting to see too, how he was a sort of muse to Andy Warhol.
What an extraordinary time for artists it was!
Exceptional and historical was the fact that the Metropolitan was emptied to be filled only with contemporary art (wow!!!!!!) of Geldzahler's choice.
I wish there was a Henry Geldzahler right now. But then again... only 1 Henry would not be enough. The world has become smaller, the number of people increased enormously and at the same time the number of artists has grown equally. Aside from the copycats and rubbish, there is SO much good art to be discovered. Henry would get crazy! There's just too much to choose from!

I've been experimenting last week, and currently I'm reaping the rewards!
Of course I have to wait and see if the new paintings I'm working on right now are going to be like I imagined.
I love to challenge myself, so therefore I have to take into account that it may turn out bad.... I'm curious for the final result!
I'm also experimenting with a new art-bag, and in the meantime several ideas are running through my head... I wish I could just beam them up immediately!!!
I'm driving myself crazy, as usual ;-)

Finally spring is in the air. I can literally feel it in my body and mind.
It feels like I'm crawling out of my cave after a long winter.
I feel the urge to experiment. That means a lot of try outs, not result-oriented.

Sometimes it leads somewhere, sometimes it doesn't.
Experimenting takes a lot of time 'doing'... but also just 'being'.
Perfectly just 'to be' when the sun is shining and the buds on the trees are growing. :)))))))

New painting - Quantum Entanglement

In 2 weeks ARTISHOX Art Gallery opens its doors in Hasselt - Belgium.

My art will be represented next to art of Alexandra Drenth, Lex Tintel, Karin van de Walle, Raf Veulemans, Christian Piron and Ben Wouters.

Today I finished a painting for the opening show:
Quantum Entanglement, 120x120 cm.

I made the composition for this painting accompanied by the powerful music of the Prodigy - Fat of the land - especially Firestarter gave me a boost (as always)! A lot more music was necessary to complete the painting. No painting without music!

Who's talking about humanity?

It's all about HUGE egos... the violence in the Middle-East.
The egos of the leaders who have it all... want it all..... and more.
At this very moment people in Libya are slaughtered because they protest against the rigid regime. Who's talking about humanity? This is disgusting. May the force be with the people...

Every day I dive into my own small world, trying to make it as nice, good and positive as I can. I focus on my beloved ones, my friends, the ones I care about, the ones who are important in my life or to whom I can make the difference.
And I focus on my work, of course. But I can not shut my eyes for what is happening in the world. Even with my eyes closed I can feel the unrest, the pain, the injustice.
It makes me feel so powerless, so sad. I don't want to succumb to that feeling. If I do, nothing is worthwhile living for anymore. We have to take responsibility for our own lives.
I keep on searching for the bright sides of life, and trying to create them myself as well. But then again, I wake up next morning and get confronted with the violence, injustice etc.. in this time for example the Middle-East.. and next I can't stop wondering why people do this to each other. Of course... I appreciate even more the peacefull evironment and luxury we live in, but it just is not fair!
What a strange, incomprehensible world we live in.

Impression of my solo exhibition at Galerie Tatiana Tournemine in Paris, which ended last weekend.
Galerie Tatiana Tournemine is situated in the beautiful 8th district of Paris, just across the Presidential workshop of Sarkozy.
Rue du Faubourg St.-Honoré is filled with high quality galleries and luxurious shops like Prada and Moschino etc...
I'm very happy to be able to work with this gallery, which also has an affiliate in La Baule, in Normandie, France.
My collaboration with them has been succesful up til now and there's more to come.
It was very nice to meet friends and people who are interested in my art and hear what my art does/means to them.
This is the necessary fuel I need to keep going on! Thank you!!!

An overcrowded opening!

This beautiful Sunday afternoon we went to Vught (near 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands) to the opening of an exhibition of my colleague-friend Karin van de Walle.

We both work with Gallery Delfi Form and Gallery Tracé in the Netherlands.
Karin makes wonderful sculptures, very recognizable as real Van de Walle's in bronze and ceramics, from small to huge!
Gallery Van Loon & Simons represents Karin's work since a couple of years and now there was a big opening.
I mean really B I G !!!!
I was very impressed!
Not only by the business instinct and passion of the young owners, not only by their beautiful gallery, but also by the number of visitors.
It's been a long time that I've seen so many people crowded on the opening of an exhibition.
We had to wait to be able to enter the gallery (a big old mansion) and next we had to queue up, through the entire gallery.
We had hardly entered when we already saw several red dots (which means that the piece of art has been sold) next to Karin's sculptures.
The exhibition was a trio of Karin's sculptures, paintings of Marta Jedrysko and chocolate sculptures (YES!!!) of Arthur de Rouw.
There even were chocolate sculptures of one of Karin's sculptures.
Karin has outdone herself. I love to see the evolution she keeps on making, everytime again.

If you want to see her art for real, I absolutely recommend to visit this exhibition at the beautiful Gallery Van Loon & Simons, with it's very friendly staff and great collection of artists.
Don't forget to visit the beautiful, large garden with sculptures!

I can check the statistics on my website and blog. It is interesting to see from which parts of the world people are interested in my paintings.
Most viewers come from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, U.K., Brazil and the United States. Last year I've been visited by inhabitants of 68 countries worldwide.
Not bad. The visitors can be overall divided in art-lovers, art-students and artists.
Besides the countries, I can also see from which town people come.
I noticed that there are regular visitors. Even visitors who visit me on a daily basis.
I've had a few plagiary cases on my work in the past, so I'm more cautious on this.

I'm happy when art-lovers discover my work through the internet. They can see if there's a gallery in their neighbourhood where they can see my art for real or check if there will be an exhibition soon.
It's great to be an inspiration to art-students. It's a compliment when students see me/my art as a role model.
It's nice to be of inspiration to other artists. Artistic recognition is important to every artist.
It's not nice when someone who tries to be an artist/calls himself an artist, and in the meantime he/she tries to steal someone else's style/composition etc... and even tries to sell the pieces.
Some people say it's a compliment when people try to copy your art. Yes and no.
Yes it's a compliment if someone appreciates your art so much that he/she would have wanted to be the creator of it.
But if someones tries to earn his/her living with your style... you will think different about it!

My art is protected with copyright. I won a big case 3 years ago. Also I discovered a few wannabee artists who tried to copy some of my paintings and tried to sell it on the internet.
Fortunately the copies were bad extracts of the originals. But nevertheless, it's not nice to see someone tries to earn money with your creations.
If it was only to hang it on their own walls, I wouldn't care.

My advise to artists on the hunt for new ideas: experiment..... experiment.... experiment.... paint as much as you can, and develop your own style this way!
You will feel so much better having your own style, rather than stealing it from someone else. Creation from the heart is the only true one!

In the meantime I keep on developing. My art evolves because I've got this drive, an unstoppable urge to paint and keep on amazing myself and hopefully others too!

This is about more than art alone, this is about FREEDOM.

Principles and questioning....

Yes... I am self-opinionated and self-conscious.
It is not that I think I have a monopoly on wisdom, on the contrary!
Most things that come on my path I pull into question.
Not life itself, nor earth, nor the universe.
In order not to become insane, I've accepted life for what it is and I focus as much as I can on the advantages of it and on the wonders of mother nature.
What I do question is what people do, think, say, create, (try to) force upon others and why people do things/act/follow (sometimes blindly) because of the simple explanation: 'everybody does it'.
Especially the last part frightens me. I don't want to do things because everybody does it. Even as a child I already chose to take the other path.

Last Monday I saw an interview with Antanas Mockus, by Raoul Heertje (my compliments!) in the series 'Wintergasten'. Mockus is an eccentric mathematician and philosopher (known for his mooning-incident) who was the mayor of Bogota, Columbia, leading this town VERY succesfully in his own very unconventional way.
Not only did he make short work of the ruling corruption and cronyism. By following his own principles and using his imagination and perseverance, he for example succesfully introduced mimes as traffic controllers (dreadfully declining the amount of casualties). You don't believe your eyes... but it is true!

This is only one of the many changes he accomplished.
He was a candidate for the presidential elections in Colombia. Short before the elections he was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease. According to his principles he informed the people.
He ended 2nd in the race.

This man is a hero to me... I feel deep admiration.
When you see him, you would not think that this soft intellectual nerd would be capable of changing the world around him.
But he is....
He is an example to me.
Never be afraid to question!
Never be afraid to look beyond your own imagination.

Upcoming solo exhibition in Paris - Galerie Tatiana Tournemine

I've been working succesfully with Galerie Tatiana Tournemine in Paris - France since the beginning of this year.
Soon there will be a spotlight on 4 female abstractionists and I'm one of them.
Each artist will have a short solo exhibition in the cycle 'abstraction au feminin', which takes place from Jan. 17 until Feb. 12 - 2011.

My solo show will be from January 31 until February 5.

Daily opening hours: 11-14.00 h and 15-19.00 hours (Monday until Saturday)

The whites of the winter

Since the end of November the snow dominates our landscape.

The change of the seasons is an everlasting inspiration to me. I love the changing colors. I love what it does with the landscape.

The whites of the winter, in combination with the blue skies, the colors of the forest and the sun casting a warm light on nature is enchanting to me. It makes me feel like living in a fairytale.

I prefer a warm climate, but time and again I'm amazed about mother nature's wonders!

It is true... the snow and slippery roads kept a lot of potential visitors from coming to Lineart.
The amount of visitors on Saturday can be compared with what normally is expected on a Friday.
Sunday was busier, although not like on a usual Lineart-Sunday (when people used to throng the fair, anyway during the last decades)
But... I spoke to a lot of visitors at the booth of Gallery ART-ist, and the reactions were more than heart warming.
I feel overwhelmed by the enthusiastic and awesome comments and the time people took to tell me about how the experience my art.
They don't know how much this means to me, but I'm very grateful for every comment and sign of appreciation.
I don't want to brag, but when people (apart from one another) tell you that your paintings are one of the most innovative they've seen on Lineart and that they are touched by the composition, dynamics and combination of colors... I can tell you from experience: it moves you.
I can feel my wings growing.

Opening LINEART 2010

The cold, ice and snow played spoil-sport for the opening of the 29th edition of LINEART yesterday.
Fortunately not everyone stayed at home and at one point there were a lot of people.
But on the previous openings of Lineart it was much busier.
Nevertheless... the booth of Gallery ART-ist looks great and the quality of the offered art overall on Lineart is high.

So, if you are curious take your car, or go by train, bus or tram.
Flanders Expo, Gent - Belgium (the location of Lineart) can be reached very easily by public transport.

Sheer delight

I've locked myself in my studio for the past 10 days. During the last 5 days I've been working at least 12 hours a day.
My eyes are exhausted of being focussed all the time and the bright colors are dancing in front of me.
Not 2, but 3 new paintings came out. The last one is not dry yet. It had to be painted, I just had to spit it out.
It amazes me how restless I can get, how big the urge can become... strange beings we humans are!
Satisfied with the result I can lay back today and the rest of the weekend...

(ABSENCE of) Art can change the world!

In the Netherlands the government has plans to save 220 million euros on art and culture.
In Belgium they are talking about savings of only 14 million.

Of course, there's an economic crisis going on and there have to be savings in every sector.
No doubt that it is a great plan to reconsider every given subsidy in every sector.
I can only hope that a mixed committee will be composed of people who really know how important arts and cultural issues are to reconsider every given subsidy.
I never received any payment at all from the government. I've been self supporting all the time.
But, if the government would not have given subsidy to the art academy where I've studied, I would not have been able to study art, I would not have been able to do what I do right now.

Savings of 220 million euros in a small country like the Netherlands is absolutely ridiculous.
The people who suggested this plan don't have the faintest idea what the consequences of this outrageous plan will be.
They don't know how important art and culture are to a large group of people, consciously and unconsciously.

Don't those members of the government
-ever get goose bumps when they hear a beautiful piece of music?
-know that creating art, whether the quality is good or bad, has an enormous therapeutical effect?
-know that music/art/film/education in arts helps to reduce medical costs, because of their therapeutical effects?
-love watching a good movie/series on TV/play which is typical for their own country/culture or is innovative/touching etc...?
-know that art can change the world?

Jean Marc Calvet is my fellow artist at Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery in New York City. He's a self-educated autonomous artist who started painting about 8 years ago....
Via a terrifying trip to hell and back, Jean Marc Calvet was given a second chance at life, and now a successful artist on a quest for redemption, he embarks on an extraordinary journey to make peace with his past. Dominic Allan is the director of this movie. Edith Progue is the music-master.

The last time I saw some of Jean Marc's paintings for real is about 2 years ago. Back then it was already impressing. But having followed his evolution I can see the progress and I like very much what I see. It's GOOOOD! I love the shadows in his work, I love the playing with the layers... it makes it deeper, more intens, just like life itself is.

I'm very curious for the movie!

Today is one of those days that I'm not at ease with myself and painting is not satisfying me.
Fortunately I do not have many of those days. So if it happens I don't fight it, but accept my 'off-day' after a short struggle with myself.
Clear my head, reading, taking a walk... it all helps. And feel-good-things too!
One of my friends recently sent me the link to a very inspiring short movie.
One which shows that one can be creative, even despite the worst imaginable problems.
Take only 20 minutes of your time to watch it... it will enrich you.

I had a great time with ARTISHOX Art Gallery at BLOOOM, the creative industries art show, part of the world famous ART fair 21 in the Staatenhaus am Rheinpark in Cologne, Germany. Thursday at 15.00 hours the first visitors arrived and this party went on until Monday evening 20.00 hours.

What a great atmosphere at BLOOOM. I met so many lovely people... this really makes me feel so good. It was exhausting, 5 days on a row... but the great reactions gave me wings, time after time. Very succesfull!!!

Party! - Life is only what you make it

After I've been working very hard on a new collection of Portable-Art, today I finished a diptych. Not a large one, only 140x30 cm/55x12 inch, but nevertheless very laborious.

'Party! - Life is only what you make it'.

Last week Antonie Kamerling, a famous actor in the Netherlands, committed suicide, only 44 years old. I was really shocked.

First there was only the news that he was dead, but I immediately knew he committed suicide. He had something over him, a sort of 'tristesse' below the mask of happiness he wore... Apparently he suffered of depressions. He left behind a wife and 2 young children. I wish them the best.

Most people don't understand at all. He was talented, good looking, succesful and had everything he wanted, they say... But some things in life are that elusive and incomprehensible that you just have to accept that it is what it is.

Life is what you make it. So let's celebrate it as much as we can.

Why do a lot of Facebookers and LinkedInners want to collect thousands of friends?

I really don't understand and am sincerely interested!

I got myself an account on Facebook in 2007.
At the beginning I tracked down my friends, fellow artists I know in person, people from the past etc..
I was fun to communicate through this medium.
When I received friend-requests from unknown people I refused for the simple reason that I did not know them.
Nowadays most of the time the new connections come through friend-requests I receive.
I post links to my blogposts on Facebook, for the interested friends who wanted to connect themselves, and furthermore I comment on my friends messages. Also there's a bit of teasing and making fun!

I noticed that a lot of people are collecting friends.
I can understand if you admire an artist/popstar/writer/actor/musicians etc..., and you want to follow this person or group.
But what does it bring an average person to have thousands of friends? I'm really curious.
I consider myself an average person. I accepted friend requests from people who want to follow me as an artist, but I'm no Moby or Madonna.
What struck me, is that some fellow artists send requests to everybody, and after you accepted those requests, and became friends, they never show any interest in you.
In my opinion the friendship is more or less forced upon you. And only one-way. It looks a lot like spam.
Some people have no other activity on their wall then their daily completion of new friends.

Why do people collect so many friends through social media?
Is it because one derives their identity from their number of friends?
Or the amount of famous people one is connected to?
Is it opportunism, and trying to ride along with succesful people?
Is it because one thinks one can become sort of famous this way?
Is it for professional marketing purposes? And does this have satisfying results (when you're not already a famous person)
Because if everyone has got thousands of friends, their news feed-page gets stuck with messages from all those people and one can not see the wood for the trees anymore.
One cannot be famous amongst millions of famous people.

What I'm I missing if I don't start collecting lots of friends?

Portable-Art collection 2010.

Last year I did a project called Portable-Art.
The idea came up, and after a lot of experimenting a collection of art-bags appeared.
I got really awesome reactions on the art-bags (fully created and manufactured by myself, which cost me days for one bag).
But I got fed up with the very meticulous process of manufacturing and finished the project. Back to my large paintings (what a relief!!!)
However, I still love the idea and still receive great reactions. 2 weeks ago suddenly a new variation arose in my mind and I started experimenting again with new art-bags.
Above a first peek. A close-up of an art-bag of the 2010-collection under construction. The first new bags will be exhibited on BLOOOM, the creative industries art fair in Cologne (Oct 28 - Nov. 1). When the collection is ready I'll add it to the Portable-art page on the Project-page of my website (I need to update the old page).

I'm reading a very interesting book, written bij Ab Straatman. It's about living from the heart (only published in Dutch).
It's full of confirmations about how I think about life (which touches me because I always thought I was a bit crazy concerning this), and of course also new insights.
Interesting is the part about male and female. He writes that on cellular level there is only a tiny difference in the DNA of men and women.
Deep in your soul everyone is masculin and feminin. But deeper, in your subconsciousness, you're neither masculin, nor feminin.
That struck me because I've often experienced that when I'm creating, and I'm in a sort of 'not being around'-mode, it doesn't matter at all who I am, or what I am.
Actually, when I'm in that sort of mode, I do not realize it. It's always afterwards, when I ask myself where I was when the composition was made.
Also, I'm often told that one's thought on first sight was, that my paintings were made by a man. It comes as a surprise that they were created by a woman.
I think that my paintings come from deep within me. From the place where it doesn't matter what you are.
Ab says that your subconsciousness is one of the strongest creating forces in life. In every way! I think it's true.

It took me all week to paint this new work which consists of about 7 layers.
It's 140x110 cm / 55x43 inch.
'The big coalescence', my expression for unconsciously and consciously wishful thinking for a better world.
I've given up the idealistic idea that this will ever come true, so I create my own world.
And I like it! ;-))

French painter Jean Marc Calvet, living in Nicaragua, is my highly esteemed fellow-artist at Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery in New York City.
British Director Dominic Allan has made a long feature film about his-everything-but-common-life.
CALVET - redemption from darkness to fame. It will be released in 2011.
Saturday Jean Marc sent a message that the soundtrack of the film was online now.
Curious as I am for the movie, I immediately went to the website of Edith Progue, the micro-classical music composer of this soundtrack who lives and works in Paris.
I listened every track of 'CALVET'... Goose bumps! Especially Aelita. It made me even more curious to view the images which go with the music.
And I just had to discover the rest of Edith Progues music.

Engine of progress

The funny thing with my paintings is, that one often thinks that they are made very quickly.
I think this is because of the movements/dynamics in the painting. But actually it takes several days up to a week (to 2 weeks for a very large one), to create a new painting.
It's been build in lots of layers. When I'm not satisfied with the result of a layer, I have to remove it before it is dry.
It's not like with digital work where you can add or remove layers as much as you like, without damaging the rest of the work.
My latest work, 'Engine of progess', 120x100 cm/ 47x39 inch consists of 7 layers.

The bitch is back!

Finally, everything has been installed in my new studio, except for the light (daylight lamps). But since there are large windows, it would only be a problem on dark clouded and rainy days. In a few weeks the lamp-problem will be solved.
Eager as I am, I've already been busy in the last few days creating my first painting in this new environment.
It's a delight to paint again!

A very nice Sunday at 'Très Chic'

Gallery ART-ist from Geel - Belgium, asked me to join them on the fair yesterday.

Despite the changeable weather it was really crowded at 'Très Chic'.

Actually too crowded at some moments. But what a lovely audience! This resulted in some very nice conversations, funny and lovely comments on my work and after a long day I can say that it was more than successful!

Opening party for VIPs

Yesterday there was an opening party, only for VIPs (I found out that there actually are a lot of VIPs in this world...), at the life style event Très Chic, in the Herkenrode Abbey of Hasselt. Although it was raining, and part of this event is in open air (well, pavillion tents) it was crowded with beautiful and très chic people. The rich and famous arrived in Limousines, Porches, Rolls Royces, Jaguars and even by helicopter and Laurent-Perrier Champagne was poured generously. I observed all this, with eyes wide open, waiting for my brain to understand. (I'm still waiting...)
